The eventful winter window came to an end for Bayern Munich with the arrival of Bryan Zaragoza from Granada. The Spanish winger was set to join Bayern in the summer, but a serious knee injury to Kingsley Coman forced Rekordmeister to bring the transfer forward by six months.

The record Bundesliga champions ended up strengthening central defense, right-back, and attack in the mid-season transfer window. They were initially expected to strengthen the midfield by signing a defensive midfielder, but the emergence of Aleksandar Pavlovic allowed them to postpone the midfield signing until summer.

Bayern decided against making a move for Fulham’s Joao Palhinha in January. The Portuguese midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Bavaria since he came close to signing for them on the deadline day in the summer.

The Bavarian club is expected to be in the market for a defensive midfielder in the summer. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has been heavily linked with Die Roten, while Joao Palhinha also remains an option on the table. The latest update from Germany reveals two more names on Die Roten’s shortlist to strengthen the midfield in the summer.

According to Bild, Bayern are keenly following the situation of Adrien Rabiot at Juventus. The French midfielder will be out of contract in the summer, so he can be an attractive option to strengthen the midfield department at Bayern. The record Bundesliga champions were also linked with a move for Rabiot in the last summer transfer window.

Bild also reported that Bayern tried to sign Argentinos Juniors midfielder Federico Redondo in January. The 21-year-old Argentine midfielder may become an option in the summer when his current deal comes to an end. Redondo impressed for Argentina’s U-20 team during the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2023.

Die Roten are reportedly expected to make tough decisions in the summer. In the midfield department, there is significant speculation around the futures of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Kimmich has entered the final 18 months of his deal, so Bayern may cash in this summer if a contract extension is not agreed before the end of the season. Selling Kimmich is reportedly no longer an unrealistic topic of discussion at Die Roten.

Meanwhile, Goretzka has not been the first choice midfield option for Thomas Tuchel despite his solid performances this season, which does suggest that Bayern could be open to his departure in the summer.

In the event of seeing both German midfielders leave in the summer, Bayern will need two new midfielders. Redondo could be the younger midfield option, while the likes of Rabiot/Palhinha/Zubimendi may become the experienced midfield option. It will be fascinating to see how Bayern approaches the summer window when it comes to replenishing their midfield department.
