Bayern Munich fans had hoped to see Paul Wanner get game time in the first team, at least in the first half of the season, since Jamal Musiala was ruled out for several months due to injury. However, the youngster preferred a permanent move away from Bayern to continue his development.
The Bavarian club agreed a fee worth €15 million with PSV Eindhoven for the permanent transfer of Wanner. The German attacking midfielder signed a deal until 2030 with the Dutch champions. Bayern have also inserted a buy-back clause in the deal.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder made his debut in the 4-2 win against FC Groningen last weekend. Wanner has excelled in the last two loan spells in Germany. Considering the trajectory of his development over the last two years, there is no doubt about him excelling for PSV.
Bayern chief Max Eberl was bemused by the lack of patience shown by Wanner as he was set to get opportunities in the first team this season. However, Wanner has no bitter feelings about Die Roten and spoke glowingly about his time in Munich during his interview with Eindhoven Dagblad.
" I have so many memories at FC Bayern. I was even a ball boy there. I'm very grateful to Musiala for all the tips he gave me. Thomas Müller really looked after me. He's an incredibly smart man. And I'd also like to mention Joshua Kimmich, because he talked to me a lot. Bayern is a club that cultivates a winning mentality from day one. I'm very grateful to them"Paul Wanner
PSV ticked all boxes for Wanner
Wanner also explained the reasons behind moving to PSV Eindhoven this summer. The Dutch club tried to sign him two years ago, but he had decided to stay in Germany. He heard a lot of great things about the club from Malik Tillman, his former teammate at Bayern. Tillman excelled for PSV before moving to Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
The 19-year-old also insisted that the style of play at PSV Eindhoven suits him well. Wanner has made substitute appearances in his first two league games. As the league progresses, he is expected to get a considerable amount of time. If he manages to fulfil his potential at PSV, Bayern will certainly activate the buy-back clause.
The departure of Wanner will likely benefit Lennart Karl. The exciting, versatile forward is training with the first team. He also got a start in the first round of the DFB Pokal earlier this week. Karl is considered an ideal player to deputise for Michael Olise, but he can also play in other attacking positions.
Meanwhile, Bayern are open to a loan exit for Jonah Kusi-Asare. The youngster’s loan move is likely to be resolved in the next two days, provided Bayern Munich get a deal done for a new forward.
