The last couple of weeks have seen departures at Bayern Munich. Kingsley Coman left the Bavarian club to join Al-Nassr. Coman will not be the last first-team player to leave Bayern this transfer window, as Paul Wanner is close to leaving Munich.
According to Sky Sports in Germany, Bayern have agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven for a permanent transfer of Paul Wanner. The Bavarian club will get a fixed fee of €15 million plus add-ons for the 18-year-old attacking midfielder. Bayern have also included a buy-back clause in the deal.
There has been intense speculation around Wanner’s long-term future at Bayern over the last 12 months. He excelled at Heidenheim last campaign and returned to pre-season training at Sabner Strasse this summer. With Jamal Musiala sidelined until the end of 2025, Wanner was expected to get game time in the first team this season.
However, it looks like the youngster wants to play regularly next season. A move to PSV allows him to play in the Champions League and continue his development into a well-rounded attacking midfielder.
There was a lot of interest from Bundesliga clubs in Wanner, but the Dutch club managed to see off competition. Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart were heavily linked with a move for Wanner. PSV had also tried to sign him last summer, but they couldn’t get the deal over the line.
Buyback clause is a silver lining for Bayern in this deal
Wanner has been rated highly at Bayern. The Bavarian club always believed that Wanner could be part of the first team for several years, which further raises questions about sanctioning a permanent transfer this summer. It does look like Wanner has also pushed for a permanent move.
Bayern did the right thing by including a buyback clause since Wanner is bound to become a big player if he gets consistent game time. The exposure to the Champions League football will further enhance his game.
The Bundesliga champions will need to add at least one more attacking player to the squad before the end of the transfer window. The departure of Wanner will further deplete Vincent Kompany's options in the attack. They have already lost Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane on free transfers. With the departure of Coman last week, they have lost three senior forwards and just added one forward in the form of Luis Diaz. The club chiefs need one more forward before the end of the window to boost Die Roten's chances of going deep in all competitions.
