Bayern Munich have been good at integrating young players from the academy into the first team over the last six years. In the current squad, Bayern have Josip Stanisic, Jamal Musiala, and Lennart Karl as first-team players after coming through the academy.
Lennart Karl had a brilliant start to life as a first-team player at Bayern. He was Die Roten’s breakout player during the 2025/26 campaign. Karl’s incredible form at the club level earned him a place in Germany’s World Cup. Unfortunately, an injury in training before the tournament didn’t allow Karl to play in the tournament.
Karl missed the entire pre-season due to injury. He returned to action last month against VfB Stuttgart. Vincent Kompany has managed his game time carefully since he returned after a long spell on the sidelines.
The youngster grabbed an assist against Bodoe/Glimt in the Champions League and scored a crucial opening goal away at Elversberg in the Bundesliga. Karl was very animated while celebrating this goal, which potentially triggered the home fans of Elversberg.
Karl has been criticised in Germany for his polar attitude and arrogance. However, his agent Michael Ballack has defended the 18-year-old. While talking to Podcast Kerners11 (via iMiaSanMia), Ballack insisted that a teenager like Karl needs to have a strong personality to make it at a club of Bayern’s stature.
"Lennart has a personality, and that is very important. In an environment like FC Bayern, you won’t make it at 17 if you don’t have a strong personality. That's what young players need today. They need individuality. Of course, they need talent, but they also need qualities that may have been somewhat lost nowadays in upbringing, in schools, but also in youth academies."Michael Ballack
Karl was subject to criticism last season when he admitted that Real Madrid are one of his dream clubs where he would like to play someday. The youngster later apologised to fans and insisted that he was misinterpreted. The Bavarian faithful forgave Karl quickly as he continued to perform at exceptional levels in his debut season.
Ballack insisted that Karl was asked which was his favourite club apart from Bayern. The teenager’s answer was taken out of context, which eventually led to anger amongst fans.
Bayern not worried about Karl’s personality
There have been no concerns at Bayern about Lennart Karl. They have backed the youngster despite criticism from the media. The 18-year-old is considered a crucial part of Die Roten’s long-term plans.
Bayern will hope Karl continues to polish the rough edges of his game and develop into a world-class player. He will have a big role to play for Die Roten this season. A positive start to the season suggests that injury has not hampered Karl’s progress in the first team.
Karl is currently with the German national team. He is expected to get game time in the third and fourth games of the international break. Karl will look to make a positive impression on the newly appointed Germany head coach, Jürgen Klopp.
