On Tuesday evening, Bayern Munich took to the field for matchday six of their UEFA Champions League campaign, as they travelled to Gelsenkirchen to face Shakhtar Donetsk. Vincent Kompany's side won the game 5-1, after goals from Konrad Laimer, Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise (x2).

For the task at hand, Kompany opted for an XI of; Peretz — Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Guerreiro — Kimmich, Goretzka — Olise, Musiala, Sané — Müller.

It was a disastrous start for Bayern, with the Ukrainian side taking the lead after just five minutes of the game. Two minutes later, Sané found himself in the referee’s book.

However, around the ten minute mark, Bayern were level. A through ball to Olise ricocheted to Laimer, who smashed it into the roof of the net to level up the score at 1-1.

With ten minutes of the opening period remaining, Olise fired over when well placed. One minute later, Goretzka had a header blocked, as he looked to score on his return to his old Schalke 04 home.

With two minutes of the first-half remaining, a quick Shakhtar break led to a guilt edged chance, but somehow Georgiy Sudakov missed the target from an inviting cross. A huge let off for Kompany’s side.

Bayern would make them pay merely moments later. The high press led to Sané winning the ball back, laying the ball to Musiala, who had the composure to find Müller from close range, as the 35-year old slotted home for his 55th goal in the competition.

That would be that, and Bayern would go into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Second-half blitz helps Bayern thrash Shakhtar Donetsk

Three minutes into the second-half, the ‘hosts’ looked certain to score, but Müller was there to make an incredible goal saving block, to add to his first-half finish.

Twenty minutes into the second-half, Tel and Boey replaced Sané and Guerreiro. Straight after, Musiala had the ball in the back of the net, but it was disallowed— with nobody quite sure why.

Two minutes later, Bayern had a penalty. Perhaps surprisingly, Olise stepped up, cooly placing his spot-kick into the corner of the net, to make it 3-1 to Bayern.

In truth, it was an extremely soft penalty. However, the decision to rule out Musiala’s goal was even harsher. So, it all evens out really.

With just under five minutes remaining, Musiala was on the deck, thinking he should have had a penalty. However, Bayern would attack and the ball would fall to the 21-year old, who had got himself back up. He then sat two defenders down, before slotting into a gaping goal, to put the gloss on the victory.

After the goal, Kompany made a triple change; as Dier, Aznou, and Ibrahimović replaced Müller, Kim, and Laimer for the closing moments of the game.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Olise made it a five star performance, as he scored his second goal of the game, going on a solo run, before sitting down the goalkeeper to fire into an empty net.

Bayern travel back across Germany with an excellent 5-1 win in a professional performance. With no Neuer, Davies, Kane, and several other players, tonight was all about just getting the win. To do so in such emphatic fashion is a huge testament to Kompany and the players.

This result leaves Bayern in 8th place in the Champions League, the final automatic qualification spot, with 12 points from their six games so far.
