The report from an incredibly disappointing night in the Champions League for Bayern Munich, who have lost two of their opening three games in the league phase.

On Wednesday night, Bayern Munich traveled to Barcelona in the Champions League for matchday three of the league phase, and it proved to be a humiliating evening for Vincent Kompany's side as they suffered a 4-1 defeat.

For the task at hand, Vincent Kompany opted for a line up of; Neuer - Guerreiro, Upamecano, Kim, Davies - Kimmich, Palhinha - Olise, Müller, Gnabry - Kane.

It was the nightmare start for Bayern Munich, as a Fermin Lopez through ball found Raphinha, despite Kimmich nearly intervening, and the winger kept his composure through on goal to round Neuer and score the opener.

Bayern thought they had an equaliser ten minutes later, when Kane headed home a cross from the right, but VAR disallowed it for a marginal offside call.

However, just minutes later Kane would have his goal. A lovely ball from Michael Olise set Serge Gnabry away, and his cross was well finished by the England captain.

26 minutes in, Neuer got away with a big error, as Lamine Yamal tackled him whilst playing out from the back, but the ball bounced just wide.

With ten minutes of the first period left, a world class ball from Kane found Raphael Guerreiro at an angle around six yards out, but he seemed in two minds whether to shoot or pass, and the ball was cleared.

Bayern Munich punished by Barcelona for high-line and chaotic defending

Bayern would be punished a minute later, as a mix up at the back allowed Lopez to square to Robert Lewandowski, who tapped home. There was a check for a foul on Kim, but the officials were not moved.

Two minutes before half time, a world class Kane pass put Alphonso Davies in behind, but he could not find Gnabry. Once again, Bayern were punished, as one minute later, Raphinha cut inside and scored to make it 3-1 heading into the break.

Four minutes into the second half, João Palhinha fired over when well placed. It would soon be game over, as Raphinha completed his hat-trick to make it 4-1.

Kompany responded with a quadruple sub as he brought on Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané for Palhinha, Müller, Gnabry, and Olise.

With just under a quarter of an hour to go, Kane found Sané in behind with a lovely ball, but the substitute took too long to make his mind up and the ball was soon clear.

In the last five minutes of normal time, Konrad Laimer replaced Guerreiro with the final sub of the game, and that was that. Bayern were condemned to a 4-1 defeat.

The general performance was not that horrendous. Barcelona scored four goals from four shots on target, and there were individual errors for a couple of the goals. And if Guerreiro and Sané had had more composure when found in dangerous positions in the area, Bayern could have gotten something out of the game.

However, that cannot be written off as "one of those games, it won't happen again". As much of a legend as he is, Neuer has been suspect all season. Sané has been off it for 12 months now. The likes of Guerreiro are still slow. Upamecano and Kim still have silly moments in them. None of those things are one offs.

This result leaves Bayern 23rd in the league phase, only in a play-off position by two places, never mind an automatic qualification to the last 16. The next game (at home to Benfica) has just become absolutely huge.

To finish off, a quick shoutout to Harry Kane. The one Bayern player that can come out with any credit tonight. Did not deserve to lose the game.
