How Harry Kane fared under new England manager Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich
By Tom Vinall
When Thomas Tuchel left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, Harry Kane probably thought that would be the last time he worked with the German manager. It seemed like their final action together was that fatal substitution at the Bernabeu, where Tuchel was forced to withdraw Kane who had an issue with his back – something that ate at him all summer.
It has turned out to be far from the case, however. It has been announced that Tuchel will be the new manager of the England national team, replacing the departing Gareth Southgate, who stepped down from his post in the summer, after eight years, four tournaments, and 102 games in the job.
Harry Kane's record under Thomas Tuchel at Bayern
Whilst Bayern did not have the success that they would have hoped under the stewardship of Tuchel, there is no doubt that from an individual point of view, Kane loved his time under the 51-year old. The England captain scored 44 goals and provided 12 assists in 45 games under Tuchel, scoring a goal every 89 minutes – the best ratio he has produced under any manager of his career.
The 31-year old scored every 107 minutes under Southgate, every 114 minutes under Jose Mourinho, 116 minutes under Mauricio Pochettino, and every 135 minutes under Ryan Mason, yet despite all of these superb records, he still scored at a better rate under Tuchel.
As you would expect, there has been a divided reaction to the news about the former Bayern boss becoming England manager, with several people unhappy to have an overseas manager in charge. Other fans just want to win and will take any manager that helps break the 58-year wait for a trophy.
For the first time in a while, Kane played as more of a poacher under Tuchel at Bayern, having often dropped deep, sometimes controversially, under other managers. It will be interesting to see how Tuchel uses him in the England set up.
