The first two competitive games of the season have seen Bayern Munich excel in the attack, with all forwards chipping in with a goal or an assist. From a defensive point of view, Bayern have looked slightly shaky but still managed to earn one clean sheet and only conceded a consolation goal against Stuttgart in the Supercup.
As the season progresses, Bayern will get better defensively. The Bavarian club has no plans to add a new player to the defense during the final week of the summer transfer window. There will be no last-minute departure from the defensive department of the squad.
According to Bild, Kim Min-jae is set to stay at Bayern this summer. The South Korean defender is eager to stay in Munich despite the club’s stance of listening to offers for him this summer. The defending champions have now ruled out a move for him this late in the transfer window.
Al-Nassr and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with Kim Min-jae this summer. The Champions League winners didn’t follow up their interest with an offer as they ended up prioritizing a move for Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth. Al-Nassr also never made a bid for Kim Min-jae. A move for the South Korean defender didn’t become a topic of discussion during the negotiations for Kingsley Coman.
Kim Min-jae was in fine form for Bayern during the first half of last season. However, his form dipped during Ruckrunde, which eventually raised doubts about his long-term future in Bavaria. The South Korean defender was also reportedly contemplating a move away from Munich.
Kim Min-jae no longer first choice option in central defense
The Club World Cup and the first two games of the new season have confirmed that Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah are the first-choice center-backs for Kompany. Tah has seamlessly settled into the team since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season.
Kim Min-jae will get ample opportunities this season since he is the third-choice center-back. The South Korean defender delivered a solid performance against RB Leipzig after coming off the bench in the second half. He made a fine interception late in the game to set up a goal for Harry Kane.
The former Napoli defender will have to make the most of the opportunities he gets this season. Kim Min-jae certainly has the quality to excel at Bayern, but he needs to show consistency over the entire campaign.
