The recent international break was special for Bayern Munich forward Lennart Karl. The teenager got his maiden call-up for the German national team after his impressive performances in his breakthrough season at Bayern.
Karl came on at the hour mark to replace Leroy Sane to make his debut for Germany against Austria. He came on at halftime in the game against Ghana. The youngster didn’t score or provide an assist during his time on the pitch, but his performances were impressive.
It has been a sensational season for the youngster. He has made the most of his opportunities in the first team at Bayern. After a brilliant Hinrunde, he endured a dip in form during the second half of the season. However, a return to form over the last few weeks helped him to secure a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the international break in March.
After his two cameos against Austria and Ghana, Nagelsmann had words of praise for Lennart Karl. While talking to the media after a 2-1 win against Ghana (via Kerry Hau), Nagelsmann hinted that Karl certainly has a good chance of making it to Germany’s final squad for the World Cup in the summer.
"Lenny made a great impression in both games. He's a very good player. That was a small step forward. Now I hope he stays humble, keeps pushing, and gets a few more appearances at Bayern. Of all the young players we've had here so far, he's been one of the best."Julian Nagelsmann about Lennart Karl
Karl set to play big role for Bayern in the next two months
Karl has a big role to play for Bayern in the next couple of months. He has been exceptional in the Champions League, scoring four goals and creating one in six appearances. The youngster already has 13 goal contributions (eight goals and five assists) for Die Roten this season.
The youngster can make an impact after coming on late in the games against tired defenders. He has also managed to string a run of consistent performances when given consecutive starts. It will be interesting to see how Vincent Kompany uses him during the final phase of the season.
Karl can thrive in the super sub role for Germany during the World Cup. His immaculate close control in tight spaces and dribbling can help Germany unlock a tight game. If he continues to do well for Bayern in the next two months, it is a no-brainer for Nagelsmann to include him in the final squad.
After a positive international break, Karl will return to Bayern full of confidence. The youngster is excited about the big Champions League games against Real Madrid. Karl found himself in hot water when he said that Real Madrid is his dream club. Delivering good performances across two legs against the Spanish giants will be a good way for Karl to make amends.
