Bayern Munich did not lose today, inexperience did
It might sound a bit crazy, but the truth is Bayern Munich's first team did not lose today. Vincent Kompany fielded a starting lineup of all U19 talents from the academy, with the oldest being 19-year-old Guido Delle Rovere.
The rest of the starting lineup is mostly 16-year-olds who have barely played for the second team, let alone the first team. The young lads seemed to have been caught by pressure in the first half as they could not string together any proper build-up plays.
Goalkeeper David Podar-Stiube, central defender Raphael Pavlic, and right-back Richard Ajayi were the poorest performers of the first half. But there is still a long journey ahead of them, and they should not be judged by their performance in this game.
When Kompany brought on the first team players in the second half, Bayern were comfortably in control of the game. There were still some shaky moments at the back, including the goal conceded, but it is hard to blame another two young centre-backs and a left-back playing out of position.
Offensively, Armindo Sieb was underwhelming playing as the number 9, as he did not contribute in link-ups or in the final third. This Bayern team today is far from the team we will see as the season starts in late August. Few of the first-team players will be back for the next preseason match against Rottach-Egern on Thursday.
Overall, there is no reason to panic; rather, be happy for the talents that they were given a chance to shine.
