A good week for Bayern Munich has been spoiled by a big injury development on Saturday. Serge Gnabry is set for a long spell on the sidelines after tearing an adductor in his right thigh during the final training session before the game against VfB Stuttgart.
Bayern have not given a timeline on his return, but his season has ended with this injury. His participation in the World Cup is in doubt as multiple reports in Germany are suggesting that the complete recovery will take three to four months. If things go well in recovery as planned, Gnabry will be fit by the start of the pre-season.
Vincent Kompany confirmed on Sunday that the injury occurred during training while Gnabry was practicing penalties. The Belgian coach insisted that it is a big blow for the team, but he is confident that other forwards will step up in Gnabry’s absence.
It is a cruel blow for a player who was enjoying a good run of form for club and country. He was expected to feature in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the World Cup in the summer.
Gnabry has rediscovered his best form this season. He chipped in with 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. The 30-year-old forward recently delivered a good performance against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final.
Vincent Kompany on Gnabry's injury: "I think he injured himself while taking penalties [in training]. That was very, very unfortunate and surprised us all. Serge has done a lot for us this season. Of course, it's a pity for him and for us too. But we also have some other guys. I…

The German forward worked tirelessly out of possession to lead Die Roten’s press from the front. Gnabry’s impressive performances with and without the ball this season helped him earn a new contract.
In the absence of Gnabry, Jamal Musiala is likely to get game time in the number ten role. The young attacking midfielder had looked like his old self after a difficult return to action from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a serious ankle injury.
Lennart Karl starts training on the pitch at Sabner Strasse
Gnabry’s injury is a big blow for Bayern. However, the Bavarian club also received a positive update on the injury front this week. Bild (via iMiaSanMia) spotted Lennart Karl resuming training on the pitch this weekend.
The youngster has missed the last three games due to a hamstring strain. He will certainly miss the DFB Pokal semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, but is expected to be available for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain later this month. With Gnabry ruled out for the season, Kompany needs his other forwards to be available for the business end of the season.
