Bayern Munich had focused on extending contracts during the winter transfer window. The outcome of intense negotiations will be seen over the next few weeks as Bayern start announcing the contract extensions. The first player to sign the new deal is Serge Gnabry.

Die Roten made an announcement on Thursday confirming that Gnabry has signed a new two-year deal with the club. The German forward would have become a free agent in the summer if he hadn’t signed the new contract.

Gnabry is pleased to sign another contract extension, which will ensure that he will complete 10 years at the club by the time he reaches the end of the new deal.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed an exceptional turnaround of fortunes at Bayern over the last 12 months. Die Roten were open to listening to offers for him in the last two summer transfer windows. However, Gnabry was eager to stay in Munich and fight for game time.

After an ordinary last season, Gnabry came out firing all cylinders this season. He enjoyed great returns in the final third during the Hinrunde. The German international did a fine job in the number ten role when Jamal Musiala was sidelined with a long-term injury.

Gnabry’s first preference was to extend his time in Munich. As the season progressed, Bayern opened the doors for him to sign a new deal. The former Arsenal forward reportedly took a pay cut to sign a two-year contract.

Gnabry’s experience in the attack will help Bayern

Bayern may not start Gnabry in every game moving ahead. The German forward is not as lethal in the final third as he used to be a few years ago, but his experience is still crucial for Die Roten in big games.

Gnabry is a versatile forward, which gives Bayern and Vincent Kompany a lot of tactical flexibility. The 30-year-old forward also has a role to play as a leader in the locker room. Considering how he has fought back during a difficult phase over the last couple of years, Gnabry is an ideal role model for young forwards in the squad.

Die Roten lost a lot of experience in the attack last summer as Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, and Thomas Müller left for different reasons. In such a situation, it was necessary for Bayern to keep Gnabry. From a financial perspective, Gnabry’s willingness to take a pay cut made a contract extension a straightforward decision for Bayern.
