It has been a gruesome last 12 months for Alphonso Davies. After suffering a serious knee injury in April 2025, Davies was ruled out for six months. The return from knee injury has not been straightforward for him, as he missed several games for Bayern Munich during Ruckrunde last season due to different muscle injuries.

Davies missed the business end of last season due to a muscle injury. However, this injury was not serious enough to prevent Canada from participating in the World Cup. He missed Canada’s first group game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, he is set to return to the matchday squad on Thursday against Qatar.

While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch insisted that Davies may not start against Qatar, but he is fit to make an impact from the bench.

After the 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada needs a win on Thursday to ensure they are well placed to qualify for the next round. Davies’ return will be a big boost for Canada as he is one of their key players.

Davies faces competition for place in starting XI at Bayern

Before suffering a serious knee injury, Alphonso Davies was one of the key players for Vincent Kompany. He got back to his best under the Belgian coach after a couple of underwhelming seasons. Bayern moved swiftly and secured his future amidst reports linking him with a free transfer to Real Madrid.

The serious knee injury and subsequent muscle problems for Davies over the last 12 months have ensured Bayern have to strengthen the left-back position. They are close to signing Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt for €55 million. The German defender primarily operates in the left-back position.

Brown will compete with Davies for a spot in the starting XI. Both players can play higher up the pitch, which opens up the prospect of both playing together. However, it is certainly a wake-up call for Davies to make the most of his opportunities to get back to his best.

Bayern are not actively looking to fetch offers for Davies. However, he is no longer an undisputed starter for the team. If a significant offer comes for him, Bayern may end up considering the possibility of parting ways with the full-back. It is unlikely he leaves this summer since his injuries will be a cause of concern for interested clubs, and his significant wages are also a deal breaker.

Davies is content with life in Munich. After a difficult spell on the sidelines, he is desperate to get back to his best. A positive World Cup and a summer break can help Davies to get the ideal springboard to excel next season.
