Bayern Munich have enjoyed an incredible start to the season, winning every game in the first two months of the campaign. Vincent Kompany has managed to extract the best out of the smaller squad at his disposal.
While the attacking players are getting the limelight for scoring so many goals, the midfielders have been near perfect to give players ahead of them a perfect platform to shine. Leon Goretzka has been part of this midfield setup. The German international has enjoyed a very solid start to the campaign.
The former Schalke midfielder had to work hard to get into the plans of Vincent Kompany and Bayern. Goretzka was told to find a new club last summer, but he decided to fight for game time in Munich. Eventually, Goretzka got opportunities last season, and he made the most out of it. The good form from last campaign has continued into the ongoing season.
Despite good performances over the last 15 months, Goretzka’s future at Bayern remains uncertain. While the club is deliberating, Goretzka has only one wish for his future. According to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Goretzka wants to sign a new deal at the club. He identifies with the club and the sporting project despite having to fight consistently to get meaningful game time.
Goretzka has attracted interest from the Premier League in the last couple of years. However, the German international has been keen on achieving success with the Bavarian club. He is not the most appealing midfielder when it comes to passing range and vision, but the German is certainly one of the hardest-working players in the current Bayern squad.
Bayern yet to make a decision on Goretzka’s future
While Goretzka is eager to extend his stay in Munich, Bayern are betting on younger midfielders like Aleksandar Pavlovic and Tom Bischof to play a more prominent role in the center of the park.
From a financial perspective, it makes sense for Bayern to part ways with Goretzka at the end of the season. The German international is one of the top earners in the squad. With Bayern being cautious about the wage bill over the summer, they are unlikely to offer a long-term deal to Goretzka.
Apart from his good performances in midfield, Goretzka is also a leader in the dressing room. Die Roten are likely to take a call on his future during the second half of the season. The club knows Goretzka’s priority, which gives them time to assess and come up with an offer that will make economic sense.
In the meantime, the Bavarian faithful and Vincent Kompany will hope Goretzka continues to show consistency on the pitch. His strong performances at the club level will also confirm a place in Germany’s squad for next summer’s World Cup in the USA.
