Bayern Munich did an incredible job in 2025 to hold on to several senior players who had entered the final year of their contracts. Joshua Kimmich was in this group of players as he committed the rest of his peak years to Bayern.
The German midfielder has been one of the most consistent players for Die Roten over the last decade. He has played well in the right-back and center of the park. The last five years have seen him completely settle in midfield, becoming one of the most complete midfielders in Europe.
Along with playing well on the pitch, Kimmich has also developed into a leader at Bayern. He is expected to become the captain of the first team once Manuel Neuer decides to hang up his boots.
Despite his consistency over the years, Kimmich’s future at Bayern was uncertain two years ago. There was significant interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the German midfielder. In the recent document with ZDF (via iMiaSanMia), Kimmich revealed that he came very close to signing for PSG due to a lack of support and admiration at Bayern.
"Paris was a club that showed me a strong commitment. One that I hadn't even really expected. I spoke with the sporting director, Luis Campos, and the coach, Luis Enrique. I have to say they did a really good job and gave me the impression that they really wanted me, so you naturally start looking into it."Joshua Kimmich
Bayern also considered Kimmich as one of the players who can leave to raise funds. Eventually, Kimmich decided to stay at Bayern as he was not keen on uprooting his family from Munich.
From sporting perspective, Bayern had lost their way. They were struggling in the Bundesliga, losing the title to Bayer Leverkusen. The performances in the Champions League had also declined, leading to reports that the squad needed an overhaul.
Arrival of Vincent Kompany changed fortunes of Bayern and Kimmich
The appointment of Vincent Kompany as the head coach at the end of the 2023/24 campaign changed Bayern’s fortunes. The Belgian coach hit the ground running, implementing an attractive style of football by getting the buy-in from the squad.
Joshua Kimmich excelled under Kompany in the center of the park. The German midfielder was one of the first names on the team sheet. Die Roten started moving on an upward trajectory. The club chiefs also decided to keep Kimmich due to his importance in Kompany’s style of play. The German midfielder ended up signing a new contract at the start of 2025, six months before the expiration of his previous deal.
After winning the domestic double with Bayern, Kimmich is focusing on achieving success with Germany at the World Cup. Germany are not favourites for the tournament, but they have certainly improved under Julian Nagelsmann.
