Bayern Munich have got back to their best in the last 18 months. They regained the Bundesliga title last season after losing it to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24. Bayern also look much more tactically competent in the Champions over the last 12 months.
There has been a stark improvement in Bayern’s fortunes since the appointment of Vincent Kompany as the head coach of the first team. The Belgian arrived in Munich at the end of the 2023/24 campaign after the departure of Thomas Tuchel.
Courtesy of the success on the pitch in the last 18 months, Bayern Munich have rewarded Vincent Kompany with a contract extension. The Belgian coach signed a new deal until 2029 on Tuesday. His previous deal was set to expire in 2027. Kompany had no hesitation in signing a new deal once the club approached him, as he feels settled in Bavaria and believes in the club’s sporting project.

Kompany has managed to defy critics from the word go
There was a lot of scepticism in Germany when Bayern decided to appoint Kompany as the new head coach. The Belgian coach was coming off a disappointing campaign with Burnley, as they were relegated from the Premier League. Having said that, Kompany had also helped Burnley to win the Championship by a canter in the previous campaign.
Despite implementing an expansive style of football at Burnley, managing the first team at Bayern is altogether a different ball game. Moreover, Kompany was not in Bayern’s list of top five coaches they were targeting to replace Tuchel. Bayern missed out on several targets before settling down with the appointment of Kompany.
The Belgian coach was not frightened by the scale of the challenge at Bayern. He managed to hit the ground running, helping Die Roten play an attractive style of football and get desirable results in the Bundesliga. The Bavarian club ended up winning the Bundesliga title in Kompany’s debut season in Munich.
In the Champions League, Bayern lost against Inter Milan in the closely fought quarter final. Kompany’s Bayern are aggressive at pressing and causing opposition teams trouble when they are dominating possession.
Along with being an impressive coach, Kompany’s man-management and precise communication have ensured that players have quickly grown fond of him. Despite a difficult summer transfer window, Kompany has ensured Bayern have enjoyed a rollicking start to the campaign, winning all of their 11 games across all competitions until now.
Taking all the above factors into consideration, it is fair to say Kompany deserved the contract extension. The Bavarian faithful is excited to see how the Belgian takes this team to the next level.
