Bayern Munich are working on multiple contracts during the winter transfer window. Despite the strong interest in signing Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, the primary focus for Bayern in January was to clinch contract extensions for Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, and Jamal Musiala.
It does look like they have found a breakthrough in negotiations with Davies. The Canadian full-back is close to agreeing a new four-year contract with Bayern. Die Roten have managed to rebuff interest from the Premier League and Real Madrid to secure the future of Davies.
Apart from Davies, Bayern have also made progress on the contract extension of Jamal Musiala. According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern have agreed to include different time-based release clauses in the new contract of Musiala. The German attacking midfielder and his representatives reportedly want a release clause worth €175 million in his new contract.
Die Roten and Musiala still need to iron out an agreement on wages, but things are moving in a positive direction. Both parties want to agree on a new contract. From Bayern’s perspective, they want to close the deal before the end of the season.
Bayern are unlikely to entertain release clauses for other extensions
The Bavarian club found themselves in a difficult position regarding Musiala’s contract since he has less than 18 months left on his current deal. Bayern want to make Musiala the face of the club for the next decade. They have never entertained release clauses but are likely to make exceptions for Musiala since he is a top talent who has the potential to become the best forward of his generation.
Adding release clauses in new deals is unlikely to become a norm at Bayern. The Bavarian club will not entertain such requests in other contract negotiations. It does look like there is no release clause in Davies’ contract, while Kimmich’s demands will unlikely involve a release clause.
Moreover, the release clause requested by Musiala seems to be a significant number that will not put Die Roten in a bad situation if a club activates it.
Bayern were ready to give Musiala a significant salary bump, so further negotiations are likely to be straightforward after they agreed to include a release clause. With inroads made in negotiations with Musiala and Davies, Bayern will hope to find a breakthrough in talks with Kimmich.
The record Bundesliga champions will turn their attention to Sane’s contract situation once the above three deals are secured. The German winger needs to perform consistently to earn a new deal, or else he may end up leaving Bavaria on a free transfer in the summer. Sane has started 2025 in the best way possible. The Bavarian faithful will hope to see more consistency from him during the second half of the season.
