The defensive department of the senior squad at Bayern Munich certainly needs strengthening. Apart from solving the recent problem of conceding too many goals, Vincent Kompany may need a couple of new faces in the defense.
The central defense is well-settled after Dayot Upamecano signed a new deal earlier this year. Unless there are departures of Kim Min-jae or Hiroki Ito, Bayern are not expected to sign a central defender. The full-back positions are the primary area of strengthening for the Bavarian club.
The priority for Bayern in the full-back department is the right-back position. As things stand, Konrad Laimer is the only natural right-back in the squad. Josip Stanisic can do a job in this role, but he is much better on the left side of the back four. Sacha Boey left Bayern on loan in January due to a lack of game time. He is expected to leave Munich permanently in the summer.
To strengthen the right-back position, Bayern had identified Givairo Read from Feyenoord as a possible addition. The Dutch right-back has been heavily linked with a move to Munich throughout the season. However, it does look like Die Roten’s interest has cooled down.
As per Sky Sports in Germany (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are not actively pursuing a move for Read. The report from the German media outlet suggested that midfield and attack are priorities for the record Bundesliga champions.
Read has also attracted interest from Manchester City. Earlier this season, reports in Germany suggested Bayern had already held talks with the defender’s representatives and opened negotiations with Feyenoord. However, it does look like Bayern have cooled their interest.
The young Dutch full-back has endured a difficult season due to injuries. It does look like a change of priorities in the transfer market, and Read’s injuries may have put the transfer to Bayern on the back burner.
Bayern need two full-backs this summer
The Bundesliga champions certainly need additions in the midfield and attack. However, the full-back position is also in need of strengthening this summer. In fact, the Bavarian club should look to sign a left-back and a right-back this summer.
Alphonso Davies has been struggling with injuries, while Raphael Guerreiro is leaving Munich on a free transfer. It is crucial that Die Roten sign a left-back and right-back to give Kompany good depth in this position. The full-backs play a crucial role in Kompany’s high-intense style of football, so Bayern cannot neglect strengthening these positions in the summer.
