Vincent Kompany has earned plaudits for getting the best out of forwards at Bayern Munich in the last three months. The Belgian coach has implemented an attractive style of football, which has seen Bayern forwards enjoying healthy returns in the final third. Kompany has also improved defenders notably Alphonso Davies.
The Canadian left-back has looked back to his old self in the last couple of months. Davies is the undisputed first choice left-back for Kompany right now. Die Roten are also pleased with the performances of the 24-year-old defender. The Bavarian club remains keen on securing his long-term future amidst strong interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
According to Bild, Bayern have made a final contract offer to Davies this season. It is a take it or leave it offer. Vincent Kompany rates him highly, but there remains uncertainty around his future in Munich.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports in Germany (via iMiaSanMia) are reporting that Bayern have not made a final contract offer but negotiations continue in the background. Davies will be free to talk with interested clubs in January regarding a free transfer in the summer. Real Madrid have been heavily linked with Davies over the last 18 months, while Manchester United have recently showed interest in him.
Christoph Freund remains optimistic about renewal for Davies
As things stand, Davies is more likely to leave Bayern than sign a new deal. However, Bayern are not giving up on a contract extension yet. While talking to media on Friday (via iMiaSanMia), sporting director Christoph Freund expressed confidence about keeping Davies beyond this season.
"The confidence is there. I'm positive about how much fun Phonzy is having at the moment. The style of play suits him, he feels comfortable in Munich. He plays a lot and very well. We hope that things will continue this way for a long time to come."Christoph Freund
Bayern had endured a difficult relationship with the representatives of Davies during the contract negotiations. The Bavarian club want to extend his contract on their terms, which is not in line with the salary demands of Davies.
Max Eberl held positive talks with Davies in the summer, but the club’s board decided against improving terms of the contract. Bayern decided to allow Davies to enter the final year of his contract since there were no bids for him in the summer.
The prolonged contract negotiations and uncertainty about future at Bayern affected Davies on the pitch. However, Kompany has managed to clear the clouds of uncertainty and helped Davies to get back to his best. The Bavarian faithful will hope Davies has a change of heart and he signs a new deal. If not, they will hope for a fantastic final season in Munich with a lot of trophies for the Canadian full-back.
