Bayern Munich may have to look for defensive reinforcements in the summer, considering the fact that there is uncertainty around the future of a couple of center-backs. Dayot Upamecano remains in talks with Bayern for a new deal, while Kim Min-jae may leave in the summer for regular game time.
In such a scenario, Bayern may need to sign a center-back to maintain quality depth in the heart of the defense. The Bavarian club is cautiously optimistic about extending the contract of Upamecano. If the French international signs a new deal, Bayern may look for a young prospect in central defense instead of going for a star. It does look like the Bavarian club is already looking at young defenders in the market.
According to Talksport (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are keeping close tabs on Cardiff City and Welsh defender Dylan Lawlor. Vincent Kompany has been keeping a close eye on the defender after his former assistant and teammate Craig Bellamy gave a glowing review about Lawler. Bellamy is currently working with Lawler as the head coach of the Welsh national team.
Lawlor has been playing consistently for Cardiff this season. He has racked up more than 1200 minutes of game time in League One. The teenager also has one goal and one assist to his name this season.
The young Welsh defender has 2.5 years left on his contract at Cardiff City. He can turn out to be a shrewd buy for Bayern if he has a proper pathway in the first team. Cardiff City may not ask for an exorbitant fee for Lawlor due to his contract situation. This summer will be the last opportunity for them to get a sizeable fee if he decides against signing a contract renewal.
Bayern also have senior center-backs on their transfer list
Apart from young defenders, Bayern have also worked on deals to sign a senior center-back to be prepared for the scenario where Upamecano rejects the contract extension and leaves on a free transfer in the summer.
The Bavarian club has held talks with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The England international will be a free agent in the summer. He can hold talks with interested clubs during the winter transfer window for a free transfer at the end of the season.
Apart from Guehi, Bayern have also shown interest in Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund. The German center-back’s contract expires in 2027. As things stand, he has not shown any urgency to negotiate with Dortmund for a contract extension. He could be on the move in the summer.
