Bayern Munich have been linked with several players ever since their campaign ended in Berlin with a win in the DFB Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart. The Bavarian club is yet to sign a player this summer, but they will certainly strengthen midfield, defense, and attack.

In the defensive department, Bayern have been linked with Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender had an injury-riddled campaign in Manchester. With Pep Guardiola leaving the club, there has been speculation around the future of several players, including Gvardiol.

It was reported in Germany that Gvardiol is open to a return to the Bundesliga by joining Bayern. The record Bundesliga champions have been admirers of the Croatian defender. However, a move to Munich is unlikely to materialise for Gvardiol.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern are not going to join the race to sign Gvardiol despite having strong admiration towards the defender. The Croatian has a new contract offer from Manchester City. If he decides against signing a new deal, a move to Real Madrid looks likely for Gvardiol.

Gvardiol will be expensive for Bayern this summer. Manchester City paid €90 million in 2023 to sign the Croatian defender from RB Leipzig. He has two years left on his current deal, giving Manchester City decent leverage to get a considerable fee.

Bayern not actively looking for a central defender

In terms of strengthening the defense, Bayern are looking to sign full-backs instead of central defenders. They are closing on a deal to sign one full-back as talks are progressing well with Eintracht Frankfurt for Nathaniel Brown. The 22-year-old left-back may undergo medical for Bayern in the USA since he is currently part of Germany’s World Cup squad.

When it comes to signing a central defender, Bayern are not aggressively looking for a player in this position. They managed to extend the contract of Dayot Upamecano, ensuring Kompany’s best center-back pairing of Upamecano and Jonathan Tah are playing in Bavarian colours next season.

Die Roten will look to sign a defender if Kim Min-jae or Hiroki Ito ends up leaving the club. The South Korean defender is content being the third-choice center-back. Meanwhile, Bayern are open to listening to offers for Ito this summer. The Japanese defender has struggled with injuries since arriving from VfB Stuttgart in 2024. Bayern will look for market opportunities to sign a central defender instead of going for a marquee name like Gvardiol.
