Bayern Munich are not planning a big investment in defense this summer. The Bavarian club has a good group of center-backs, who did well this season. However, departures can certainly change Bayern’s plans in this position.

Considering the good work Vincent Kompany has done at Bayern over the last two years, Bayern have once again become an attractive option for top players in Europe. The Premier League players have excelled in Munich over the last three seasons. It is not surprising to see that one of the Premier League defenders is keen on joining Bayern this summer.

According to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol is keen on joining Bayern Munich this summer. The Croatian defender wants to return to the Bundesliga, and his representatives are pushing for a move to Bayern.

Die Roten do like the profile of Gvardiol, but he is not a prime target for them due to the transfer fee it will take to sign him from Manchester City. The Premier League side will look for a fee close to €60-70 million for a player who has two years left on his contract. Manchester City had paid €90 million to sign Gvardiol from RB Leipzig in 2023.

Gvardiol has endured a difficult season at Manchester City due to a serious Tibia injury. He has missed the entire second half of the season, making 18 appearances in the Premier League for the English side. Manchester City still rates him highly, and SportBild has reported that they are ready to offer him a new deal.

Lothar Matthaus hints at Bayern’s interest in Gvardiol

Earlier this month, Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus revealed that he had heard murmurs about Bayern making enquiries about Gvardiol. The former German international said this during a live TV program (via Yahoo Sport) in the buildup to Bayern’s game against FC Koln.

Gvardiol can play as a left-back and a central defender. He excelled in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig, which helped him to get a big move to Manchester City. The Croatian defender has been a key player for Pep Guardiola over the last three seasons, excelling as a full-back.

Bayern do need to sign full-backs this summer since Raphael Guerreiro is leaving on a free transfer, while Sacha Boey is also expected to leave on a permanent transfer in the summer. Gvardiol can be a good fit in the full-back position, but Bayern have other priorities, and they are unlikely to pay such a hefty fee to sign him this summer.
