The winter transfer window officially opened on Thursday. Bayern Munich are not looking to make signings, but they certainly have deals for a few players’ exits. The first deal of the winter transfer window at Bayern involves a goalkeeper.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Sky Sports in Germany, and Bild, Bayern have reached an agreement with Southampton for a six-month loan deal for Daniel Peretz. The English club also has an option to sign Peretz at the end of the season for €8.5 million. The Israeli goalkeeper is undergoing medical to complete a move to the Championship Club.

Peretz had a difficult first half of the season as he struggled for game time at Hamburg. Bayern had loaned Peretz to Hamburg in the summer with the plan of him playing week in week out. However, the 25-year-old managed to feature in only two DFB Pokal games for Hamburg during Hinrunde.

Bayern terminated his loan spell and decided to find an opportunity in the winter transfer window. There was no point in keeping Peretz during Ruckrunde since Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Peretz will have to look for a permanent transfer in the summer

The option to buy inserted in the deal with Southampton does suggest that the 25-year-old goalkeeper will leave Bayern on a permanent basis in the summer. Die Roten will end up making a profit on Peretz if Southampton take up the option to buy, since the goalkeeper arrived in Bavaria for €5 million from Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2023.

Peretz need consistent game time at this stage of his career. He will not get the chance to play every weekend at Die Roten. Manuel Neuer is showing no signs of decline, while the club chiefs believe Jonas Urbig is going to be Neuer’s successor. In such a scenario, Peretz needs to look elsewhere to play regularly. The move to Southampton should help him get minutes on the pitch and eventually help in sealing a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

As things stand, Neuer is expected to sign another one-year contract extension. Urbig will continue to get game time in the few games over the entire season, but he will ultimately become number one once Neuer hangs up his boots.  The veteran goalkeeper’s future will likely be resolved at some point during the second half of the season.
