Vincent Kompany has been making changes in the right-back positions during the Club World Cup games. Konrad Laimer is the Belgian coach’s first choice option in this role at Bayern Munich. The Austrian started on the bench against Auckland City FC but got a start in the game against Boca Juniors. He was rested in the clash against Benfica, allowing Sacha Boey to get two starts in the group stages.
Boey had an injury scare against Benfica, but he will be fit for the round of 16 clash against Flamengo. The French defender will have to be content with a place on the bench since Laimer is expected to start against the Brazilian club.
The 24-year-old French defender has struggled with injuries and poor form since arriving from Galatasaray at the start of 2024. Boey has spent lengthy spells on the sidelines due to injuries, which has now forced Die Roten to consider the option of selling him this summer. A return to Galatasaray has been touted by several media outlets. The Turkish club is expected to face competition from France for Boey’s signature.
According to Footmercato, Olympique Marseille are showing interest in Boey. The French club wants a loan deal for the French full-back, but Bayern prefers a permanent deal.
Meanwhile, Boey is not keen on leaving Bayern this summer. The French full-back wants to prove himself at Bayern and fight for adequate game time. The 24-year-old feels completely settled in Munich. His future is likely to be resolved after the Club World Cup. Kompany wanted to sign Boey at Burnley, so he was expected to improve as a player under the Belgian coach. However, consistent injuries meant Boey hardly got game time to prove himself last season.
Konrad Laimer looking for opportunities in midfield next season
Laimer is set to start in the right-back role in most games next season. The Austrian was a standout performer for Vincent Kompany in this position. However, Kicker is reporting that Laimer would like to play more in the midfield next season.

Bayern are pleased with the performances of Laimer ever since arriving from RB Leipzig two years ago. The Bavarian club is reportedly considering a contract renewal for the Austrian midfielder.
Even if Boey ends up leaving this summer, Bayern are not thinking about signing a new right-back. Laimer will play in the right-back position consistently next season, while Josip Stanisic can provide the needed cover. The situation around the right-back position will be assessed as the summer progresses.
