The winter transfer window was always going to be quiet for Bayern Munich. There was expected to be one prominent departure as Bayern was ready to listen to offers for Sacha Boey.
As things stand, it does look like Boey is going to stay in Munich at least until the end of the season.
According to Bild (via iMiaSanMia), Boey rejected a move to Olympique Lyon during the winter transfer window. The French full-back has also rebuffed interest from several Premier League clubs in January. Crystal Palace were heavily linked with Boey, but a transfer never materialized.
The former Galatasaray full-back had also switched his agent. He will now be managed by Mousa Sissoko, who is also the agent of Dayot Upamecano.
Boey has struggled for form and game time ever since joining Bayern Munich. Die Roten had made him their most expensive winter acquisition when they signed him from Galatasaray in January 2024.
The French defender struggled with injuries in his first six months at the club. After the arrival of Vincent Kompany, Boey was expected to play a crucial role on the pitch since the Belgian coach reportedly wanted to sign him at Burnley. However, injuries and form of other players ensured Boey had another disappointing season at Bayern.
Boey worked hard on his fitness during last summer and made the most of the opportunities he got during Hirunde. However, there are too many players ahead of him in the right-back position. He was an unused substitute for most of the games at the end of Hinrunde. The second half of the season also started on an unfortunate note for him as he struggled with illness that sidelined him for several weeks. Boey returned to action against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
Boey will have to leave Bayern in the summer for regular game time
Even though he has decided to stay in Munich for the rest of the season, Boey will have to seek a move away from Bavaria in the summer to get regular game time. With Konrad Laimer, Raphael Guerreiro, and Josip Stanisic returning to action in the next couple of weeks, Boey will struggle to get starts for Bayern. Considering his good performance against PSV in the right-back position, Tom Bischof is also a candidate for this role.
Bayern will make a significant loss on Boey since his stocks have dropped over the last two seasons. Die Roten will have to sell him on a cut-price deal even though he has a few more years left on his contract.
From Boey’s perspective, he needs to find a club where he can play every week. For now, he will have to hope that opportunities will come for him in the Bavarian colours over the next four months as Bayern compete on all fronts.
