Bayern Munich have received positive news on the injury front this week as Alphonso Davies made his long-awaited return against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League. The Canadian left-back had last played for Die Roten in March before suffering a serious injury during the international break.
The record Bundesliga champions will also have another option in the attack when Jamal Musiala returns after the winter break. Hiroki Ito also made his return to action last month after a long spell on the sidelines.
Bayern chiefs believe the return of these three players to full fitness will strengthen the squad for the second half of the season. The Bavarian club has no plans to sign new players during the winter transfer window. However, there is a possibility that one or at most two departures take place in January.
Sacha Boey has the strongest chance of leaving Bayern in January. The French defender is not first choice full-back, and there are several players ahead of him. According to Fabrizio Romano (via iMiaSanMia), clubs have already contacted Boey regarding a move in January. The Italian journalist has reported that Crystal Palace are keen on signing the former Galatasaray right-back.
Boey got a spell in the starting XI during September and October. The return of Josip Stanisic from injury meant Boey had to be content with game time from the bench. With the return of Hiroki Ito and Alphonso Davies, Konrad Laimer will exclusively play in the right-back position. Raphael Guerreiro has also been used in the right-back role, which does suggest Boey will struggle to get game time at Die Roten during the second half of the season.
Bayern will likely make a loss on Boey
Die Roten made Boey their most expensive winter signing in 2024. He arrived from Galatasaray to provide much-needed depth in the right-back position. However, the French full-back struggled with injuries during his first six months at the club.
Boey was expected to become a key player under Vincent Kompany since the Belgian coach wanted to sign him at Burnley. However, injuries and poor form ensured Boey didn’t play a lot during last season.
It feels like the right time for Boey to part ways with Bayern and look for a club where he will play week in week out to kick-start his career. Die Roten will not be able to get the €30 million they paid for him two years ago. The Bavarian club has a good relationship with Crystal Palace after the transfer of Michael Olise 18 months ago, so the Premier League club will have an edge in the race to sign Boey.
Olympique Marseille tried to sign Boey in the summer. The French club will be in the mix to get him in January. It remains to be seen if Bayern will look for Boey’s replacement since they are focusing on getting long-term targets in the summer.
