Bayern Munich is hesitant to give standout right-back Konrad Laimer a contract extension close to his demands. The Austrian international wants a salary of around €12-15 million after his past two impressive seasons. Laimer's current salary falls around €10 million per year.
In the 2025/26 campaign, he scored three goals and delivered 12 assists across all competitions. More than just the numbers, he has been an absolutely tireless motor in Vincent Kompany's high-intensity pressing system.
Laimer also offers Bayern a lot of tactical versatility and stability as he can play well on both defensive flanks.
However, the Bayern board does not view the 28-year-old as an untouchable, unlike the players who recently received extensions, such as Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Dayot Upamecano.
The supervisory board, including Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, wants to keep the wage bill down and is unlikely to warrant another €15 million to someone they viewed as replaceable. While talking to AZ, Max Eberl insisted that talks with Konrad Laimer have stalled regarding a new contract.
"There are discussions and ideas – right now we're not in agreement. But that's okay, there's no bad blood, no resentment, just two different viewpoints. We just have to see if we can find common ground."Max Eberl
This stern action is also a message from the board to all the players that they will not be willing to fulfil all the demands and pay an absurd amount to keep them at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern open to losing Laimer on a free transfer
The current direction if Laimer does not negotiate will be to sell this summer or let him leave on a free in 2027 when his current deal expires. Eberl hinted on Saturday that Die Roten will be fine with losing Laimer on a free transfer. This is acceptable as Laimer also arrived at Bayern as a free agent from RB Leipzig.
Despite the stall in the negotiation process, the relationship between the club and the player's camp remains good and professional. Bayern Munich will also look to upgrade the right-back position in the next transfer window.
Feyenoord's Givairo Read has been a long-term target for the Bavarians. The 19-year-old right-back scored in his last match to win the game against Fortuna Sittard. Although Read is a talented player, Bayern will have to monitor him further as he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for almost half of this season.
The last thing anyone wants is to get rid of a high-calibre player like Konrad Laimer and buy an injury-prone or low-quality replacement like Sacha Boey.
