Bayern Munich ended the season strongly as they lifted the DFB Pokal after clinching a 3-0 win against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. The Bavarian club enjoyed domestic success this season, winning the DFL Supercup, Bundesliga, and DFB Pokal. Bayern also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, only to be knocked out by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain by a slender margin of 6-5.
The players will get rest for a few days before joining up with the national team for the World Cup. Meanwhile, the club chiefs will start working on transfers as the summer window opens in mid-June. In an ideal scenario, getting big chunk of transfer business is done before the World Cup.
Bayern are not expected to make significant changes to the squad. They need to make one addition in midfield, defense, and attack to improve Kompany’s options for next season.
In the center of the park, Bayern bid goodbye to Leon Goretzka on Saturday. The German midfielder is leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer. Die Roten want to sign a young midfielder to replace Goretzka. They have already re-signed Noël Aséko Nkili from Hannover, but his long-term future at the club will be decided after the pre-season.
Die Roten’s primary target for strengthening the midfield is Hertha’s Kennet Eichhorn. The teenager has been in sublime form for Hertha’s senior team. While talking to Bild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, confirmed the club’s interest in signing Eichhorn.
"When you see Kenny Eichhorn, we wouldn’t be doing our job properly if we didn't consider him. Now we have to see if it's a fit and what his and his management’s vision is. Whether it actually happens is a completely different matter."Max Eberl
Manchester City competing with Bayern for Eichhorn
Bayern face strong competition from Manchester City for the signing of Eichhorn. The Premier League club wants to sign him and loan him to Bayer Leverkusen for a season. They are reportedly the strongest competitor for Bayern despite interest from several big clubs in Europe.
Eichhorn reportedly has a release clause of 15 million in his contract at Hertha. From a financial point of view, it will not be a challenging deal for Bayern. The outcome of this pursuit will depend on how Bayern convince Eichhorn that Munich is the best place for him to develop and become the best midfielder in Europe.
Considering how well Aleksandar Pavlovic and Lennart Karl have developed at Bayern over the last few years, Eichhorn can be assured of getting game time at Bayern. Moreover, Die Roten are progressing in the right direction under Vincent Kompany, winning big trophies every season. It would be a terrific move for Eichhorn if he decides to stay in Germany.
