Bayern Munich fans got the first glimpse of this summer’s big-money full-back signing, Nathaniel Brown, on Tuesday. The initial batch of players featuring in the World Cup, including German players, reported for training earlier today.
Brown joined up with his teammates at Tegernsee for the pre-season training camp. The 23-year-old full-back completed a move to Bayern earlier this month. The Bundesliga champions paid a fee worth €55 million to VfB Stuttgart for Brown’s transfer.
The German full-back will provide depth in the left-back position. He will compete with Alphonso Davies on the left side of the back four. Brown can also play in the midfield and attack if needed. His versatility will make sure he gets an adequate amount of game time next season.
Brown was not the primary full-back target for Bayern over the last 12 months. There were constant reports in Germany and the Netherlands confirming Die Roten’s interest in Feyenoord full-back Givairo Read. While speaking to De Telegraaf (via iMiaSanMia), former Feyenoord sporting director Dennis te Kloese revealed that Bayern held negotiations in the winter to sign Read.
"Before the winter break last year, I was actively working on a transfer for Read to Bayern Munich. At that point, several other clubs also entered the race. Their offers were all around the €25 million mark, with some even going slightly higher."Dennis te Kloese
It does look like that Read’s injury problems last season eventually stopped Bayern from completing the transfer. As the second half of the season went on, Die Roten’s interest in Read cooled off.
As things stand, Nottingham Forest are reportedly pursuing a move for the Dutch defender. Manchester City and Arsenal were also linked with Read, but Feyenoord have not received any bids from the Premier League giants.
Bayern have no plans to sign a right-back this summer
The Bavarian club has completely altered their plans for full-back positions after cooling interest in Read. As things stand, Bayern have no plans to sign a right-back this summer. However, they are open to listening to offers for Sacha Boey. The French defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Galatasaray.
Bayern have extended the contract of Konrad Laimer. The Austrian will be the first-choice right-back for Die Roten next season. Josip Stanisic and Joshua Kimmich can also play in this position if needed.
The Bundesliga champions have a settled defensive department. Along with Sacha Boey, they are also open to listening to offers for Hiroki Ito. Barring these two players, Die Roten are not expecting any departures from the current group of defenders. The Bavarian club may look to add new faces in defense next summer when a few players will be closer to the end of their contracts.
