Vincent Kompany has been garnering praise in Germany for his start to life as head coach of Bayern Munich. The Belgian coach was a surprise appointment by Die Roten. Bayern tried to negotiate deals for five head coaches before turning their attention towards Kompany.
Pep Guardiola reportedly gave a glowing reference about Kompany to Bayern. The former Manchester City defender has shown why he is highly rated by Guardiola by delivering a strong start to the campaign for Bayern.
Die Roten are unbeaten in the Bundesliga, staying top of the Bundesliga table due to a superior goal difference than RB Leipzig. Even though results are crucial, the manner of performances under Kompany has been more impressive. They have dominated teams in and out of possession.
The players at Bayern are also enjoying football under Kompany. While talking to The Athletic, Alphonso Davies had nothing but praise for the new head coach of Bayern. The Canadian defender is specifically fond of the intense training sessions under Vincent Kompany.
"He is a very brilliant guy. The way that we’re playing now is very intense. He picks the best team and the best players to put on the team that train well. Every training session is a battle for the starting spot. Nothing is guaranteed. The way he talks to the team, he is polite but firm. He has ideas and we’re executing them well"Alphonso Davies
Kompany wants to be consistent with team’s intensity over entire season
Bayern are working hard out of possession under Kompany. They press relentlessly to win the ball higher up the pitch. The team also deploys a high line of defense to squeeze the opposition and give them no breathing space when they have the ball.
Die Roten are covering more distance in the games this season than last campaign. The high-intensity pressing certainly helps the team to get better results, but there will be accumulation of fatigue in the players over the season. Vincent Kompany told Bild last weekend (via iMiaSanMia) that he wants his team to play the same style of football over the entire campaign.
Considering how particular Kompany is about the style of football, he will not let the standards fall for the team in and out of possession. However, the Belgian coach will have to rotate the squad properly to avoid players getting burned out. The big games come late in the season, which makes squad rotation very crucial for Bayern if they want to win multiple trophies.
The immediate concern for Kompany is to find a solution for the team’s vulnerability against counter-attacking teams. They performed well against Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, and Eintracht Frankfurt before the international break, but came away with two draws and one defeat. Kompany will work on correcting this weakness in his game model during the international break. Bayern resume Bundesliga action on October 19 against VfB Stuttgart at Allianz Arena.
