Bayern Munich have significant work to do over the next 12 months when it comes to contract renewals. Some senior Bayern players have contracts expiring at the end of the season, while other key members of the squad have contracts ending in 2025. Alphonso Davies falls in the second category.
The Canadian full-back has been a mainstay in the starting lineup under Thomas Tuchel. Davies has established himself as one of the best left-backs in Europe since arriving in Bavaria four years ago. He can be a mainstay at Bayern for the next decade as he turns 23 next month.
Alphonso Davies had reportedly agreed a new contract with Bayern last season, but the dismissal of Hasan Salihamidzic brought a halt to contract talks. The new management at Die Roten needs to negotiate the terms with Davies. Real Madrid have been showing strong interest in Davies. It does look like the Los Blancos have started laying the groundwork for a summer move.
According to SportBild, Real Madrid’s chief scout Juni Calafat has started working in the background to sign Davies from Bayern. The Spanish club considers Davies as a priority transfer target. Real Madrid are ready to pay up to €50 million for Davies in the summer since he will have one year left on his contract.
Real Madrid have been signing young players to strengthen their squad over the last few years, which is a contrast from their previous model of signing experienced stars. Calafat reportedly played a key role in bringing Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund last summer, so it is not surprising to see him spearheading the club’s decision to sign Davies.
The record Bundesliga champions want to extend Davies’ stay in Bavaria. They will certainly hold talks with his representatives over a new contract in the coming months. Davies has insisted that he feels comfortable in Munich, but Die Roten cannot keep delaying talks with the Canadian full-back.
Bayern have previously lost key players to Real Madrid. Selling Toni Kroos to Real Madrid in 2014 was a big mistake from Die Roten. The German midfielder has helped the Spanish club to win multiple Champions League titles. David Alaba also left Die Roten on a free transfer a few years ago to join Real Madrid after Bayern failed to extend his contract. Losing Davies to Real Madrid will be a disaster since the Canadian can be their left-back for a decade.

The Bavarian faithful will hope that talks over a new deal with Alphonso Davies are successful and the club quickly secures his future. Apart from Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane also have just over 18 months left of their contracts. Christoph Freund and Bayern will hope that talks with all three players will have a positive conclusion before the end of the season.
