Leroy Sane has been the most consistent player for Bayern Munich this season. The German forward has improved concentration and execution on the pitch to become a complete player instead of one who just played in moments. He went into the international break on a good note by scoring a goal against Freiburg on Sunday.
Sane has scored six goals in the Bundesliga this season. He has also scored once in the two Champions League games. The German winger is playing the best football in the Bavarian shirt since arriving in Munich from Manchester City three years ago.
The 27-year-old winger has benefitted from the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at Bayern in April. The German coach has found a system to get the best out of him. Sane has also instantly formed a strong partnership with Harry Kane in the final third, which has helped Die Roten to become a dangerous team.
Leroy Sane has become a key player for Bayern and Tuchel. The German winger is repaying the faith shown by the club and coach. The next step for both parties is to negotiate a contract renewal since Sane’s deal at Die Roten expires in 2025. While talking to the media on Sunday (via Sport1), Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, confirmed that talks with Sane for contract renewal are set to take place in the coming weeks.
"“We will certainly hold talks in the next few weeks. He’s an exceptionally good player, a key player – and it would be nice if he stayed in Munich for a long time.”"
Bayern worked hard to sign Sane from Manchester City. They couldn’t get the deal over the line in 2019 after the German forward suffered a serious knee injury just before the start of the season. Die Roten eventually clinched the deal early in the 2020 summer transfer window.
Sane has been a hit-and-miss for Die Roten in the last three seasons. Consistency has been the issue for him, but the contribution in terms of goals and assists has been fairly decent for the German winger. Leroy Sane has 45 goals and 37 assists in 144 games across all competitions, roughly averaging a goal or assist every two games. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)
With Sane entering the peak years of his career and getting back to his best, it is crucial for Bayern to extend his contract. They should ideally look to wrap up negotiations over a new contract before the end of the season to avoid a scenario where Sane has only 12 months left on his contract.

Barcelona have reportedly shown interest in Sane, but the German winger does look settled at Bayern right now. Freund and Bayern will hope that negotiations over a new deal with Sane are smooth. In the recent past, Die Roten have often left them in a weaker position while negotiating new contracts with key players.
