The goalkeeping department at Bayern Munich has been subject to significant debate in the past few weeks. The serious injury to Manuel Neuer in December has forced the club to look for a new keeper in the winter transfer window.

Bayern was planning to recall Alexander Nubel from his loan spell at Monaco, but the French club is not keen on prematurely ending the loan deal. Moreover, Nubel is also not keen on returning to Bavaria for the second half of the season.

The record Bundesliga champions are now working on a deal to sign Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach. Two clubs have reportedly resumed talks over a deal, and it does look like a matter of when than if for this transfer to go through. Sommer is expected to start most of the games in Ruckrunde, while Sven Ulreich will be his deputy.

With Neuer not getting any younger and Sommer also turning 35 next season, Bayern may have to dip in the transfer market for a goalkeeper in the near future. The reports in Germany suggest that Die Roten has already identified a player that can become the long-term successor of Neuer.

According to AZ, Bayern president Oliver Kahn is a big admirer of Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel. The Swiss goalkeeper is not amongst Die Roten’s immediate targets, but he could become an option at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Sky Sports In Germany has also confirmed that Kobel is one of Rekordmeister’s long-term transfer targets. The Bavarian club expects Kobel to become an expensive goalkeeper if he continues to improve at Dortmund. The Swiss goalkeeper’s current deal expires in 2026, and there is no release clause in the contract.

One thing is certain Nubel may not have a long-term future at Bayern. He wants to play regularly next season, which is unlikely to happen at Die Roten after the arrival of Sommer. Moreover, Neuer will also return to action by the start of the pre-season training. Nubel will look for a permanent move to continue his development by playing regularly. Monaco may look to sign him permanently after a bright loan spell.

Sommer will add quality to the goalkeeping department, but he is set to be a short-term solution. The Swiss international will provide strong competition to Neuer in the next couple of seasons. However, in the long run, Sommer’s compatriot could become the number one of the record Bundesliga Champions.
