The second half of the season will finally begin for Bayern Munich later this week. The record Bundesliga champions will travel away to RB Leipzig on Friday as they look to extend their lead at the top of the points table. Ahead of their first game in almost three months, Bayern has one key area to address in the transfer window.

Die Roten wants to sign a goalkeeper in January after Manuel Neuer broke his leg in a freak accident during a ski trip in December. The Bavarian club wanted to recall Alexander Nubel from Monaco, but he is not keen on leaving Ligue 1 in January.

Sky Sports on Monday confirmed that Nubel would be staying in Monaco. The Bavarian club has once again turned their attention toward Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer. Talks between the two clubs had reached an impasse earlier this month since Die Roten didn’t want to pay more than €5 million for Sommer.

As per Sky Sports in Germany, talks between Gladbach and Die Roten will resume on Monday. The Bavarian club may have to increase the bid and reach closer to €10 million to convince Gladbach to sell Sommer in the winter transfer window.

Personal terms will not be an issue for Bayern since it is widely reported by German media that Yann Sommer is eager to complete the move. The Swiss goalkeeper will be hoping that a breakthrough in talks between the two clubs is achieved sooner rather than later.

Sommer has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga over the past few seasons. He has delivered several top-quality performances against Die Roten in the Bundesliga. Along with having great shot-stopping ability, Sommer is decent on the ball. The 34-year-old will go straight into the team at Die Roten if a move is completed in the coming days.

The only downside of this transfer is that Sommer is not a long-term replacement for Neuer. Bayern will be soon back in the market for a goalkeeper in the next two-three seasons. The arrival of Sommer will certainly see Nubel leaving Die Roten on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

In the short term, Bayern will benefit from the signing of Sommer. Julian Nagelsmann is desperate to add a player to the goalkeeping department. Sven Ulreich is expected to start against RB Leipzig on Friday, but the German coach is hoping to see a new face in this position sooner rather than later.
