The defensive department at Bayern Munich has witnessed significant additions this summer. The Bavarian club has finally added a quality attacking right-back by signing Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Mathijs de Ligt arrived from Juventus to replace Niklas Sule in the current squad.

In terms of departures, Sule left Die Roten to join Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer. Chris Richards sealed a move to Crystal Palace after spending the last 18 months on loan at Hoffenheim. Omar Richards also returned to England after one season in the Bundesliga. The English left-back will be playing for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League next season.

The departure of Richards does leave Bayern light in the left-back position. However, Sport1 is reporting that Bayern has no plans to sign a replacement for the English full-back. Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa was linked with a move to Bavaria, but Die Roten is unlikely to spend big on a left-back this summer.

Bayern is considering Lucas Hernandez as the cover for Davies. The French defender has played in the left-back position for club and country in the past few seasons. He may not provide the same attacking edge as Davies, but he is a reliable performer in this position.

Die Roten currently has enough depth in the center-back position, so Hernandez can be occasionally used as a left-back next season. Hernandez is expected to play as a left-back for France in the World Cup later this year. The few opportunities in the left-back position at Die Roten will be good preparation for the World Cup.

Hernandez’s place in the starting XI does look certain since he shone under Nagelsmann in the center-back position. As things stand, Hernandez and de Ligt will be the first choice center-back pairing for Die Roten next season. When Hernandez is used in the left-back position, Dayot Upamecano will slot in the heart of the defense.

The report from Sport1 also confirms that Nagelsmann has also been using Paul Wanner in the left-back position during training sessions. This move will help Wanner to improve certain attributes of his game and also allow him to be regularly involved in the first team setup.

Meanwhile, Bouna Sarr could be another departure in the defense for Die Roten before the end of the transfer window. The Senegalese right-back is unlikely to get consistent playing time next season. Benjamin Pavard and Mazraoui are ahead of Sarr in the pecking order for the right-back position.
