Should Bayern Munich pursue Matthaus’ recommendation to replace Lewandowski?
It is going to be a challenging transfer window for Bayern Munich as they have to find a replacement for one of the most prolific goal scorers in the past five seasons. Robert Lewandowski has decided to leave Bavaria as he wishes to seal a move to FC Barcelona.
The German Champions are reportedly in talks with Sadio Mane and Sasa Kalajdzic to bolster the attack in the event of Lewandowski’s departure. However, Lothar Matthaus has urged Bayern to look at the possible signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.
The Belgian striker has been unsettled at Stamford Bridge. He is reportedly exploring a move back to Inter Milan in the current transfer window. However, the Italian club cannot afford to sign Lukaku permanently due to financial problems. In such a scenario, Die Roten does have an opportunity to explore the signing of Lukaku.
After enjoying a good couple of years at Inter, Lukaku moved to Chelsea for a deal close to £100 million last summer. However, his second stint at Chelsea has been disappointing. The Belgian striker has struggled for consistent playing time under Thomas Tuchel in the second half of the season.
Lukaku’s scoring exploits throughout his career definitely make him a viable candidate to replace Lewandowski. The Belgian striker has managed to score 274 goals in 563 appearances at the club level until now. If provided the right service in the box, Lukaku can come with good returns for an entire season.
In his two seasons at Inter, Lukaku managed to score 64 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. If a club can find a way to get back him in form, then he can be relied upon to score 30-35 goals every season. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)
Lukaku can be a viable replacement for Lewandowski. He remains at the peak of his career and previously expressed his admiration for the Bavarian club. However, the biggest sticking point for this deal to go ahead is the possible transfer fee demands of Chelsea. The English club will be looking to recoup the majority of the fee they paid for him last year.

There is no doubt that Lukaku can thrive at Bayern, but the financial numbers will not add up for Die Roten. Even if they manage to do a loan plus the obligation to buy, there will be a significant financial outlay for the entire transfer. Matthaus has recommended a good striker to replace Lewandowski, but it is not a realistic transfer deal to execute.
