The quest for the tenth consecutive Bundesliga title for Bayern Munich remained on track this weekend as they clinched a narrow 1-0 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt. The victory was particularly sweet for the Bavarian faithful as Die Roten has not managed to win in Frankfurt in their last two attempts.

Robert Lewandowski worked tirelessly in the game. The Polish striker was not rewarded with a goal in this game, but it was a quality performance. Even without scoring goals, Lewandowski plays a big part in the team’s victories. Despite his contributions, Die Roten is still taking time to open talks with him over a new deal.

Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed before the game against Frankfurt that Bayern wants to keep Lewandowski for a long time. However, Lewandowski was surprised to hear those words from Salihamidzic since the Bavarian club has not taken efforts until now to extend his contract.

According to Sport1, Lewandowski and Pini Zahavi have been waiting for Die Roten to open contract talks. The Bavarian club had a tough time dealing with Zahavi last year when they tried to extend David Alaba’s contract. The relationship between the super-agent and Salihamidzic has been strained since they couldn’t meet the wage demands of Alaba.

Lewandowski is currently focusing on winning two trophies with Die Roten by the end of the season. However, the Polish striker will reportedly look for a move away from the club if Rekordmeister doesn’t open talks for a new deal. His current deal with Bayern will expire at the end of the 2022/23 season.

It is not surprising to see Die Roten taking time to assess the situation surrounding Lewandowski. The Bavarian club has publicly confirmed interest in Erling Haaland and reportedly touched base with his agent Mino Raiola. Lewandowski is the best number nine in the world, but Die Roten is probably looking at the bigger picture if they are trying to explore a deal for Haaland before opening talks with Lewandowski.

Moreover, Die Roten has the leverage of one more season with Lewandowski. The Polish striker may try to force a move in the summer, but the record German champions have previously shown strong resolve to keep him.

Bayern is absolutely justified to take time to assess options before committing a big financial outlay for a forward in the mid-30s. Meanwhile, the Polish striker also deserves clarity about his future as soon as possible. Nevertheless, the next couple of months will give more clarity about Lewandowski’s long-term future in Bavaria.
