The winter transfer window has been crucial for Bayern Munich in terms of long-term squad planning. Die Roten didn’t make any signings for the first team, but they managed to secure the future of two players that will have a big say in the club’s long-term success.

After reaching an impasse in contract talks last summer, Die Roten swiftly renegotiated a renewal with Kingsley Coman. The French winger currently has the longest contract in the Bundesliga. The Bavarian club ended the transfer window by reaching an agreement with teenage star Paul Wanner for his first professional contract. The teenager is tipped to become a crucial player for the first team in the future after making his debut at the start of January.

The Bavarian club will now focus on the contract renewal of senior players in the squad. They have already made a contract extension of Robert Lewandowski as their priority. Manuel Neuer is also expected to renew his contract before the end of the season.

Apart from Neuer and Lewandowski, Thomas Muller also has less than 18 months left on his deal. The defending German champions are likely to extend his contract, but negotiations are yet to begin. While talking to SportBild this week, Muller insisted that he is relaxed about the situation despite no contact from the club regarding a new deal.

"“I’m very relaxed and at the same time confident. Nobody from the club has approached me yet. So we have to wait and see what the future will bring.”"

It is a complete no-brainer for Die Roten to offer a new deal to Thomas Muller. Moreover, Muller’s passion for the club will also make sure that it is a financially feasible deal for both parties. It will be a big surprise if the negotiations don’t begin between Muller and Die Roten before the end of the season.

Lewandowski ends up taking all headlines due to his fantastic goal-scoring records, but Muller has been equally crucial for Die Roten in the past two seasons. The German forward got back to his absolute best under Hansi Flick and became one of the most creative players in Europe. He has managed to break the record of most assists in a single Bundesliga season.

In the same interview, Muller once again confirmed his plan to leave Bavaria in 2019. The German forward was struggling to get consistent playing time under Niko Kovac, which forced him to evaluate his future.

Eventually, Flick was appointed as head coach, and things changed completely for Muller. His consistency has been the same under Julian Nagelsmann, so he remains one of the first names on the team sheet. Thomas Muller has incredible fitness levels as he plays almost every game. He still has a lot to offer, so a contract renewal is a matter of when rather than if.
