Bayern Munich set to prioritize contract renewal of Robert Lewandowski
The winter transfer window has seen Bayern Munich focussing on contract renewals instead of signing new players. Die Roten managed to get a big through earlier this month during contract talks with Kingsley Coman. The French winger eventually signed a new long-term deal.
After Coman’s contract extension, Sky Sports in Germany is reporting that Die Roten is prioritizing the contract extension of Robert Lewandowski. Pini Zahavi is waiting for the Bavarian club to begin negotiations for a new deal. Lewandowski’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
The Bavarian club has been relaxed about Lewandowski’s future despite persistent speculation. The Polish striker has been linked with English clubs and Real Madrid, but Rekordmeister has consistently insisted that he remains an important player for them. The club’s president Herbert Hainer also wishes to see Lewandowski retire at the club.
Lewandowski has also insisted earlier this season that he wants to achieve more success with Die Roten. It does look like a matter of time before his contract is renewed since both parties seem to be on the same page. Moreover, Lewandowski continues to score goals for fun, making him the best striker in the world.
The speculation surrounding Lewandowski has been fuelled by the Bavarian club’s interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland. Die Roten had reportedly touched base with Mino Raiola to keep updated about Haaland’s plans about a summer transfer. However, former club officials have always hinted that signing Haaland is unrealistic for Die Roten.
The defending Bundesliga champions could afford the transfer fee for Haaland since there is a release clause worth €75 million in his contract at Dortmund. However, the Norwegian will command big wages that could shatter the wage structure at the club. Raiola will also command a significant commission to complete this transfer.
Considering all these factors surrounding Haaland, it makes sense that Die Roten wants to secure the future of Lewandowski. The next four months could witness the negotiations between Die Roten and Zahavi over a new deal. The Bavarian club will have to be careful about the length of the contract since Lewandowski will be 34 next season.
Apart from Lewandowski, Die Roten may also hold talks with Corentin Tolisso regarding a new deal. Previously, Tolisso was expected to leave on a free transfer in the summer, but lately, reports in Germany have suggested that both parties are open to negotiating a new deal.
