Bayern Munich remains interested in Frenkie De Jong
The upcoming summer transfer window is likely to witness changes in the midfield department of Bayern Munich. The German champions are likely to add one player in this position if the expected departures in this position materialise during the summer.
Rekordmeister has been linked with numerous midfield players in the past 12 months. On Sunday, Marca in Spain reported that Die Roten has already touched base with agents of Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong. The Spanish media outlet went one step further and reported that the German club is looking to bring the Dutch international during the current window.
The report from Marca has been quickly denied by various outlets in Germany. Sky Sports in Germany was one of the first to dismiss the report of a winter move for De Jong. Moreover, Herbert Hainer has also confirmed that there will be no arrivals in the remaining days of the winter transfer window.
Sky Sports did insist that Die Roten has been interested in the Dutch midfielder for many years. De Jong was indeed linked with a move to Bavaria when he was playing for Ajax. The Bavarian club never made an offer for him while the rest of the top European clubs were in the race to sign him. He eventually decided to join Barcelona in 2019.
De Jong has shown his talent in glimpses at Barcelona. The Spanish club has been on a decline in the past couple of years, which has also had an impact on a top talent like De Jong. The Dutch midfielder is still 24, so the best years of his career are ahead of him. If the Spanish club decides to part ways with him next summer, various top clubs will be interested, including Bayern.
The Dutch international is known for his crisp passing and creativity in the number eight role. He can play that killer ball and help his team to dominate the proceedings in the center of the park. De Jong can also be used in a number six position since he can evade the press and keep things ticking in the midfield.
De Jong will definitely be a top-quality addition for Rekordmeister. It will take a significant portion of their transfer budget to sign him in the summer. The recent reports hinting severed relationship between Barcelona and Die Roten will also make this move difficult.
Nevertheless, the next few months are defining for Bayern’s midfield. The German club is reportedly contemplating a new deal for Corentin Tolisso. If Tolisso doesn’t extend the contract and leaves on a free transfer in June, then a new midfielder will definitely arrive in the summer.
