Over the last few transfer windows, Bayern Munich has lost experience in the heart of the defense. Some of those departures have been sanctioned by the German club as they looked to bring down the average age of the squad. The upcoming summer transfer window will most likely witness another departure in the defensive department at Die Roten.

The defending Bundesliga Champions are in talks with Niklas Sule over a new deal. However, it does look like Sule is set to take the next step in his career. Newcastle United has been heavily linked with Sule, but various other big clubs, including Chelsea and Barcelona, are reportedly interested in the German defender.

Sule is keeping all options open regarding his future. Until a final decision is not made, it is likely that Die Roten will remain hopeful about a new deal. The next few weeks will be crucial for a decision about Sule’s future, but the German media does believe that the former defender is on his way out of Bavaria.

Former Bayern Munich defender Lothar Matthaus does believe that Sule should look to stay in Bavaria. While talking to AZ, Matthaus admitted that losing Sule in the summer will be a big blow for Die Roten. He also had special praise for the German defender for enjoying an upturn in form under Julian Nagelsmann.

"“That would be a bitter loss for Bayern, after Alaba and Boateng, the third central defender would be gone within a very short time.”“Sule has regained his composure, he is performing consistently well again. He is also an important player for the German national team, even more so now that Boateng and Mats Hummels are no longer with them.”"

Ever since recovering from a serious knee injury in 2019, Sule had struggled to get back to his best. The German international was no longer the first choice defender at Die Roten as Hansi Flick preferred the center-back pairing of Boateng and Alaba. Moreover, the club hierarchy also reportedly had second thoughts about giving him a new deal.

The Bavarian club’s hesitance to initiate talks for a new deal meant Sule entered the final year of his contract this season. The German defender started the season well as he was reunited with Julian Nagelsmann. Sule had worked with the German coach at Hoffenheim. His arrival in Bavaria has helped Sule to get back to his best.

It will not be an outrageous shout to say Sule has been the most consistent center-back for Rekordmeister this season. Die Roten eventually decided to open contract talks with Sule for a new contract before the Christmas break. It remains to be seen whether the last-ditch efforts eventually work for the club.

One thing is sure Sule will not be leaving the club during the winter transfer window. He has a big role to play in the second half of the season as Die Roten is chasing the Bundesliga and Champions League titles. The Bavarian faithful will be pleased if he eventually agrees to sign a new deal.
