The new year has started brilliantly for Bayern Munich in terms of long-term squad building. The record Bundesliga champions managed to find a breakthrough in talks with Kingsley Coman for a new contract early this week.

On Wednesday, Rekordmeister confirmed that Coman had signed a five-year contract. The Frenchman’s new deal is set to expire in 2027. It has been a massive turnaround in Coman’s situation as he was reportedly looking to leave the club last summer after reaching an impasse in contract talks.

Over the past five months, Die Roten has been linked with numerous wingers as the club was resigned to losing Coman for the next summer window. Ousmane Dembele and Antony were heavily linked with a move to Bavaria as possible replacements of Coman.

The renewal of Kingsley Coman should bring an end to the rumours. Moreover, his signing will also give Die Roten even more flexibility in the summer transfer window. A replacement for Coman would have been a very expensive transfer, eating up a major chunk of the transfer budget in the summer.

The defending champions should now focus on strengthening the midfield and adding depth in the right-back position. Rekordmeister will also have to look for a center-back if Niklas Sule leaves in the summer on a free transfer.

The midfield will be the key area to address since there will be at least a couple of departures by the start of the summer transfer window. Mickael Cuisance has already left Bavaria at the start of this month, while Corentin Tolisso has only five months left on his contract. Moreover, Leon Goretzka has also struggled with injuries over the past couple of months. In such a scenario, getting a quality midfielder is paramount for the record Bundesliga champions.

The right-back position has been a problem position for Die Roten in the past couple of years. Benjamin Pavard has done well in this role, but he is much more conservative in the final third. Moreover, Pavard wants to play in the heart of defense going forward. Meanwhile, Bouna Sarr has also failed to impress Julian Nagelsmann to get game time this season. A good young right-back will effectively complete the overhaul of defense that started in 2019.

The acquisitions of right-back and the central midfielder will surely cost Die Roten close to €70 million in the current transfer market. The defending Bundesliga champions can then look to add an attacking player to improve the depth of the squad. Overall, Kingsley Coman extending the contract will be having a very positive impact on and off the pitch for Rekordmeister.
