Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski in final three for BEST award
The award nominations continue to flow for Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski. After enjoying a remarkable 2021, the Polish striker is up for FIFA’s BEST award. FIFA announced on Friday that Lewandowski has made it to the top three for the player of the year award.
Lewandowski will be battling out with Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah. All three forwards had enjoyed a terrific year in terms of their numbers in the final third. The results for the award will be announced on January 17.
Robert Lewandowski has previously won FIFA’s award for player of the year in 2020. The Poland international can make it two awards in a row if he is announced as the winner later this month. He recently won multiple awards organized by various magazines for his incredible year with Die Roten.
Lewandowski managed to score 69 goals across all competitions in 2021. He was the most prolific striker in the world last season. The Poland international deservedly got so many plaudits for the best year of his career when you consider the number of goals he scored for Rekordmeister.
The 33-year-old striker also broke Gerd Muller’s record for most goals in a single Bundesliga campaign. Lewandowski managed to score 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games last season. He also managed to break Muller’s record of most Bundesliga goals in a single calendar year.
In terms of collective achievements, Lewandowski managed to win the Bundesliga title, DFL Supercup, and FIFA Club World Cup in 2021. The German club could have gone deep in the Champions League last season if Lewandowski hadn’t missed the quarter-final clash against PSG.
Messi managed to help Argentina to win Copa America and lifted the Copa Del Rey trophy with Barcelona. Meanwhile, Mohammed Salah had a brilliant 2021 on an individual level, but Liverpool didn’t win trophies. As things stand, Messi looks to be the closest rival to Lewandowski for the BEST award on January 17.
Robert Lewandowski was very unfortunate to miss out on Ballon d’Or in December. The Polish striker did get the best striker in the world award at the BdO gala, but Messi ended up winning the prestigious trophy. Hopefully, Lewandowski managed to pip the Argentine for the BEST award. If he does manage to win it, then there would be hardly any complaints from any football fan due to Lewandowski’s incredible achievements in the last 12 months.
