After strengthening the defense in the last three windows by signing top-quality young defenders, Bayern Munich may switch their attention to attack next summer. The German champions may lose Kingsley Coman next summer as there remains an impasse over contract talks.
Apart from Coman, there has also been constant speculation surrounding Robert Lewandowski’s future. It will be a huge surprise if Die Roten allows the Polish striker to leave, but they could definitely bring another promising forward with the idea of being a long-term number nine for the club.
In the past couple of months, Rekormeister has been linked with numerous young forwards. River Plate’s prolific and promising young forward-Julian Alvarez is the latest player to be linked with the Bavarian club.
According to Corriere dello Sport (via Eurosport), Bayern is interested in Alvarez along with several top clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and Fiorentina. The young Argentine forward has a release clause worth €25 million in his contract at River Plate.
Alvarez is currently enjoying an outstanding campaign for River Plate. The Argentine can operate anywhere across the front three, but he has mostly played as center forward for River Plate this season. In 16 league games, Alvarez has managed to score 15 goals and set up five goals for his teammates. His impressive performances at the club level have helped him to become a regular member of Argentina’s squad. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
The 21-year-old forward could slot in as a wide forward if he gets a move to Bavaria. Alvarez can fill the possible void that will be created if Coman leaves next summer. The Bavarian club is reportedly in no mood to lose Coman on a free transfer in 2023, so a summer departure in 2022 is looking likely.
Along with playing on the flank, Alvarez could potentially share game time with Robert Lewandowski in the center forward position. The Polish striker is showing no signs of decline, but his playing time will need management at some time since he is getting closer to his mid-30s.
If Alvarez continues to score at such a ridiculous rate, then there will be much more competition for him by the end of the season. Die Roten does have a habit of taking a punt on young forwards like Alvarez, so it will be interesting to see if their interest becomes concrete as the signing of Karim Adeyemi is looking unlikely.
