Nagelsmann likely to play center-halves in back four

Manuel Neuer missed one game for Germany during the international break. However, he was back in the starting lineup for the second game this week as he collected a clean sheet against North Macedonia. The German shot-stopper should be fit to start against Bayer Leverkusen.

In the heart of the defense, Dayot Upamecano will start with Lucas Hernandez. Upamecano had a mixed game against Spain in the UEFA Nations League final last Sunday. He committed the error for Spain’s goal. The young French defender also delivered poor performance in the defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Meanwhile, Hernandez didn’t have the best international break on a personal level. He struggled against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League semi-final, which cost him a place in the starting XI against Spain. Hernandez and Upamecano will be looking to bounce back strongly against Leverkusen.

Since Benjamin Pavard is suspended against Leverkusen, Nagelsmann may decide to play Niklas Sule in the right-back position on Sunday. The German defender has done fairly well in this position this season. Nagelsmann also has the option of Josip Stanisic and Bouna Sarr, but he may opt for a safer option against Leverkusen. Fresh from his exploits for Canada, Alphonso Davies will slot in the left-back position.
