The defending Bundesliga Champions has enjoyed a good start to the new campaign. Apart from 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayern Munich won every game across different competitions in August. Julian Nagelsmann also managed to get first trophy in his new job as Die Roten clinched 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund in DFL Supercup.
Niklas Sule has been one of the mainstays of the team during a successful August for Rekordmeister. The German defender has formed a solid partnership with Dayot Upamecano in the heart of the defense.
Sule has looked confident on and off the ball during this run of games. Most importantly, he looks completely fit and up for the challenge set by Nagelsmann for him to have a successful campaign. However, there are doubts over his long-term future in Bavaria as he has less than 12 months on his current deal.
So, the question arises, what are possible approaches for Bayern?
From the sporting point of view, Die Roten should wait couple more months to finalize the terms of a new contract. Sule has endured a lot of frustration due to injuries and fitness in the past couple of seasons. Considering a bigger sample size to make a decision regarding Sule is crucial, so the club may take more time to make a final decision.
More from Bayern Strikes
- Bayern Munich: Tactical takeaways from 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen
- Bayern Munich: Kingsley Coman set to be fit for Manchester United clash
- Bayern Munich unlikely to move for Trevoh Chalobah in January
- Bayern Munich: Key lessons from draw against Bayer Leverkusen
- Bayern Munich remains keen on hiring Max Eberl
However, playing the waiting game for longer than two months could allow Sule to consider his options in January. He will be free to negotiate pre-contract with interested clubs during the winter transfer window. Securing his future soon will give the player much more stability going into an important season.
What should Bayern do with Sule’s situation?
Die Roten should go ahead and renew his contract immediately. However, they should make sure that contract renewal is in the form of a three-year deal or three plus an option of extending it by one more year. This will make sure that Sule’s immediate future at the club is secured. Moreover, Die Roten will also have the leverage to negotiate a transfer if any club comes up with an offer in the near future.
When fit, Sule can be considered as a top center-back. He became an important player for the club during his first two seasons at the club. However, a serious knee injury in 2019 has been a big setback for him.
Since Sule turned 26 on Friday, the peak years of his career are ahead of him. Moreover, he is set to work with Nagelsmann, a coach that got the best out of him at Hoffenheim. With a good start to the campaign in terms of fitness and quality of performances, it does look like the penny has dropped for Sule.
