As the countdown for the new Bundesliga campaign is coming to an end, Bayern Munich players are setting themselves targets for the new season. It is a crucial season for many players, most importantly for last summer’s signing Leroy Sane.
After two years of constant speculation, Die Roten eventually agreed to a transfer fee with Manchester City for the signing of Sane in 2020. The German winger has set his eyes on a move to Bavaria since 2019, but a serious knee injury scuppered his plans to join Die Roten two years ago.
The much-anticipated transfer was completed even before the 2019/20 campaign was concluded for Manchester City. There was a lot of excitement and expectations surrounding Sane’s arrival. However, he endured a difficult campaign in terms of performance. The effects of serious knee injury in 2019 were seen in Sane’s performances.
The second season is set to be crucial for Leroy Sane, as he will be expected to be a much more dangerous player in the final third. While talking to SportBild (via Spox) this week, Sane admitted that he wants to be decisive for his team in crucial games next season. The German winger is not bothered about numbers, but more focused on how his performances can help the team in winning big games and titles.
"“I don’t want to be measured only by goals and assists. If I get fewer goals and assists, but I manage to decide really important games in the Bundesliga or the Champions League and win titles, then it could be a very good season.”"

Sane also drew parallels with his first season at Manchester City in 2016, as he took a year to show his best in the Premier League. The German winger became a much more efficient player in the final third under Pep Guardiola and also managed to post good numbers for goals and assists.
At Die Roten, Leroy Sane finds himself in a similar situation. The arrival of Julian Nagelsmann is going to benefit the 26-year-old winger. Nagelsmann enjoys a good record of improving the output from young attacking players. Sane will benefit from his presence and eventually become a crucial player for the German Champions.
Sane managed to get ten goals and 12 assists last season. The German winger should be looking to almost double this output for Die Roten next season. He will be looking to get off the mark against Borussia Monchengladbach in the first game of the Bundesliga campaign on Saturday. (Stats courteys: Transfermarkt)
With Sane on one flank, Nagelsmann will have to make a decision regarding other winger for Friday’s game. Serge Gnabry could get the nod since Kingsley Coman returned to first-team training on Monday after missing the last two pre-season games due to a minor knock.
