Sofia Jakobsson and Hanna Glas are just one match away from claiming an Olympic gold medal. Sweden will face Canada in the final of the women’s football competition which will be contested on Friday. The two Bayern Munich Frauen players will look to continue to help their home country on their quest to claim the top spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Starting roles

Both Jakobsson and Glas have seen plenty of playing time at the Olympics. They have been a part of the starting 11 in four of Sweden’s five matches at the competition. On Friday, it’s very likely they will once more be a part of the starting lineup that will play for the gold medal.

While Jakobsson has not scored yet, she has registered three assists in four appearances which has allowed her to be tied for the most assists in the competition. Danielle van de Donk of the Netherlands is the player Jakobsson is tied with and an assist against Canada could see Jakobsson finish with the most assists.

Glas has been performing well in her appearances. She registered an assist in the 3-0 opening match victory against the United States. She played the full 90 minutes against both Japan and Australia in the knockout rounds.

Looking ahead to Canada

The match between Canada and Sweden promises to be an exciting final. Both countries have performed well in recent Olympic appearances.

In 2016, Sweden finished as runners-up in Rio de Janeiro to claim the silver medal and Canada earned the bronze medal with a third-place finish. Neither country has won a gold medal before and it will be a historic moment for whichever nation wins on Friday.  The Scandinavian nation has been near flawless throughout the tournament, right from the statement 3-0 win against the USWNT.

Sweden has been one of the top-performing offensive teams in the tournament. They have scored 13 goals in five matches which is eight more goals than Canada has registered in five matches. The strong offensive display by Sweden could be a key factor on Friday as they may be able to overpower Canada.

Based on the results thus far in the competition, Sweden should be the favorites to claim the gold medal. Their commanding win over the U.S. and the undefeated record they have maintained has been very impressive. With just one match to go, Jakobsson and Glas are showing great form and they will certainly be cheered on by their Bayern teammates as they go for gold against Canada.
