A new era under Julian Nagelsmann was underway at Bayern Munich this week as he was unveiled as head coach in front of the media. The young German manager has agreed to a five-year deal after Die Roten paid a world-record fee for a coach to RB Leipzig. Along with Nagelsmann, it was also the start of a new chapter for Dayot Upamecano.

The young French defender started training in Sabner Strasse after completing the transfer from RB Leipzig. The two clubs agreed to share the salary for the first two weeks of July to make sure that Upamecano doesn’t have to report for pre-season due to a clause in his contract.

Rekordmeister paid a fee close to €40 million for Upamecano at the end of the season. The German Champions managed to beat competition from numerous top clubs for his signature. Die Roten had to reach an agreement for personal terms and then activate the release clause in Upamecano’s contract.

In his first week as Bayern player, Upamecano expressed happiness about working with Nagelsmann. The duo has been working together at Leipzig for the last two weeks. While talking to the club’s official website (via Bundesliga.com), Upamecano hailed Nagelsmann for his approach with young players.

"“He’s a great coach, encourages both old and young players and talks to everyone. I am happy he’s here and I hope we’ll win a lot of games together.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Upamecano was always regarded as one of the best young defensive talents in Europe. Under Nagelsmann, the Frenchman continued his development and attracted attention from top European teams. His performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in 2020 firmly established him as a top defender.

Nagelsmann’s arrival in Bavaria will help Upamecano to settle quickly at the club. The French defender is used to methods of Nagelsmann, so it will not be a surprise to see Upamecano get his debut straightaway in the first game of the season. Moreover, Upamecano will be getting a complete pre-season training compared to other central defenders.

The German manager will reportedly implement a back three at Die Roten. Having a player that already knows this system inside out will be a big boost for Nagelsmann. Upamecano is likely to play in the middle of back three if this formation is used by the former Hoffenheim boss.

dark. Next. Bayern should secure signing of Camavinga

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann also wants to be reunited with Dani Olmo in Bavaria. However, a  move for Spanish international in this window is unlikely for Die Roten. Nagelsmann will be hoping that he would get at least a couple more additions to plug holes in the squad.
