Bayern Munich winger/full-back Alphonso Davies has suffered a huge blow ahead of CONCACAF Gold Cup. Davies has been ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury that he suffered in training earlier this week.

Canada confirmed late on Friday that Alphonso Davies has been sidelined for the entire tournament. Davies has returned to Bayern Munich to begin the recovery process. Considering how influential Davies has been for Canada in the last couple of years, it is a massive blow for the team in the Gold Cup.

Die Roten is yet to confirm the extent of the injury and the amount of time Davies will need to recover from this setback. Davies was initially not expected to join pre-season training due to Gold Cup. The Canadian winger will be visiting Sabner Strasse during pre-season to complete his recovery.

Davies is a crucial part of the first team, so Rekordmeister will be hoping that he recovers properly before the start of the season. He shone under Hansi Flick during the treble-winning campaign in the left-back position. During the historic season of 2019/20, he was one of the best full-backs in Europe.

However, the young forward did witness a dip in performances during the second season under Flick. A serious injury at the start of the season also didn’t help his cause last season. Flick also insisted that the workload of Canadian international needs good management to avoid burnout. The German manager did stick with Lucas Hernandez in the left-back role for most games in the first half of last season.

Davies did play more consistently in the second half of last season. He was not spectacular but kept on getting better with more minutes under his belt. With Julian Nagelsmann reportedly planning to use a three-man defense in Bavaria, Davies will be getting more freedom to attack in the left wing-back rule.

The 20-year-old full-back will have competition in this role next season. Rekordmeister has brought in Omar Richards from Reading FC on a free transfer this summer. Richards excels in the left-back/wing-back role, giving Nagelsmann good options on the left side of the defense. Moreover, Richards’ presence allows Die Roten to manage the workload of Davies.

Apart from Alphonso Davies, Hernandez is the other first-team player that suffered an injury this summer. The French defender underwent surgery on the knee after France was knocked out from Euro 2020. He is expected to be back in few weeks. Meanwhile, Christian Fruchtl has started training on the pitch after suffering a freak injury during his vacation.
